SLIP SLIDIN’ AWAYDAY AT GREAT BRICKHILL
With Greenleys Junior school suffering a leaking roof Stephen Baggaley had relocated his club’s Wednesday night’s fixtures this week to Great Brickhill Village Hall out in the sticks. Ironically the enthusiastic endeavours of the players in the three matches involved in the compact hall made the flooring ‘sweat’ after a couple of hours and playing conditions became far from ideal, some would say hazardous.
It was a bit chaotic on our table for a while but, amazingly, with the hall clearing of people the last set played with the match result in the balance went without a hitch. Some folk were effected more badly than others and I have to admit that I was one of the lucky ones, perhaps because of either my state of the art trainers or economic playing style (or a combination of both). Anyway, I won all my sets.
Again, for us at Topspin, similar to last week, a very tight match with nothing in it much to separate the teams. We shot off to a 2-0 lead when I beat Jacob Midson (18-16 in the 4th) and Mervyn Kelly triumphed over Christine Scaysbrook, but were then pulled back to 2-2 after a thumping win by big John Stamp, at 6’4” the tallest in the division, over Russell Penn and an equally emphatic doubles success. After that only a single set separated the teams until the end.
Russell scored a hat-trick last week, his first in 26 matches, but was well beaten in his first 2 sets here. Nevertheless, undaunted, he brought a steely determination to the table for his last encounter against Christine and won quite easily.
The final set was the best of the night with Jacob and Mervyn playing out some superb attacking rallies before the home side levelling the match.
If there was a man of the match then that would be me.
