Warriors battle to important win.
Warriors battle to important win.
Due to a technicality over the website, this match between two Greenleys teams was held at a neutral venue - The MK Centre.
The typical trio of Howard, Sparrow and Wood faced off against the experience of Ricky Taiwo, the power of Colin Huang, and the continental flair of Charles Phillippe - A strong trio in any league.
Jordan had to play her 3 matches and then dash off quickly.
Unfortunately for her, the 3 matches were probably over quicker than she’d hoped - Losing 3-0 to Colin and Charles, before offering some resistance against Ricky (winning the 2nd set 11-4), but ultimately losing in 4.
It’s a tough league if you are out of nick, and with the 6 team format, there is no easy match.
Nick faced off against Colin in the 4th match of the evening, and it was a tale of “what ifs” for the Kings Captain. Colin was too consistent on the day winning in 3, with Howard still feeling like he should have been 2-1 up - One of those days!
Charles took on Guy afterwards, and he reminded us of just how good he was when he played in the summer league a couple of years ago. Guy had his chances, but fell down 3-1 to the Frenchman.
Ricky and Nick followed this one, and it was a typical gritty display from Mr Taiwo - Feeling like he should have taken it to 5, he ultimately succumbed to the exceptional “pushing” of Howard, who managed to bore Ricky to death in a 4 set encounter that will quickly be forgotten about.
Guy and Colin played out the next match, and it was another scrappy affair - Both players have a similar style, and when it goes….. it goes.
Colin managed a few more magical moments in a 3-1 win, which Sparrow should have taken to 5 at the very least.
Nick and Charles resumed their head to head in the next match. Charles having beaten Howard 4-0 in the summer league of 2017 would have fancied his chances against an out of sorts Howard.
After scrapping the first 14-12, Howard quickly found himself 2-1 down to the relentless spin orientated attack from Phillippe. But as M People once sang, he searched for the hero inside himself, and somehow managed to take the 4th and 5th ends to avenge that defeat of summer 2017.
Guy and Ricky gave us another 5 set showdown to end the singles matches. In typical Sparrow fashion, the 3 sets he won, he gave up only 13 points (3,3,7) - It’s a testament to the determination of Ricky that the match went the full 5 sets.
The doubles was played out at the end (with the time already clocking 10:40) - Charles and Colin vs Nick and Guy.
To be frank, this was another match with few moments of quality - Howard and Sparrow who felt they should have won the first 2 sets, losing out 11-9 in both. The 3rd was over before it began, with the Kings pair clawing back a set for the loss of just 1 point, before the Warriors lived up to their name, and snagged the 4th and final set, 11-9.
A night of missed opportunities for the Kings, but a well fought victory for the Warriors.
