It’s “Plan B” for the Kings as they take their first victory in almost two years!
Reigning MK Premier champion the Greenleys Kings have had a tough start to post Covid life!
Going into the match with MK Pumas today, the Kings only have 12 points from 5 matches. 5 of those coming in a draw, with the remaining 7 spread across the other 4 losses.
One of those losses was a 10-0 drubbing by MK Pumas on the opening day of the season, and it was the Kings turn to host those big wild cats at Greenleys this time around!
Rocking up on a cold winter night for the Pumas was Andy Smith, Hakan Karaagac and Russell Penn, stepping in for Chris Belton.
For the Kings you had Iain Lindsey, Guy Sparrow and absent captain, Nick Howard, playing his first MK match for almost two years after having back surgery in the summer of 2021.
Guy kicked things off with Hakan, who appeared in no mood to mess around winning 3-0 comfortably.
Nick faced off against the Great Wall of Milton Keynes next, with the Kings captain just about remembering what to do, and ran out a quick fire 3-0 as well.
Iain overcame a second game blip against Russell to come away with a 3-1 win, before teaming up with Nick to take down Hakan and Andy by the same score line in the doubles.
Nick and Hakan stayed on for their match, and after Hakan took the first game comfortably, it looked like an uphill battle for Howard.
But it wasn’t to be for the Pumas star, as Howard took the 2nd end to 8, before dropping 10 points in the next 2 ends to win 3-1.
The next 4 games were both very long, and very close.
Guy had to dig deep in is repertoire to take down the wily Penn in 5 topsy turvy games, before Andy and Iain spent 3 hours deciding who wanted to win their titanic tussle in game 7.
In the end, Andy pipped Iain 11-9 in the fifth, which you’d think would be the closest game of the night.
However, Nick and Russell went 1 better! Penn with a relentless disruptive attack bamboozled Howard for the majority of the 5 ends. If truth be known, Penn should have closed out the deal with 3 match points, but Howard held on in there for a hat trick on his return to the league, winning 16-14 in the fifth!
Clearly feeling left out, Hakan and Iain went one stage further! After racing into a 2-0 lead, Iain played some fantastic stuff to take it to 5 and had some match points deep into the 5th.
But it was Hakan who finally came out on top 17-15 in an epic battle - The final 3 mins of this match were captured on video for all to wince at!
I reckon Iain scored the most points ever to only come away with 1 win - Brutal stuff!
The final game was a more straight forward affair with Guy finding his best form to take down Andy 3-0 on the adjacent table.
So it was finally a win for the Kings, and it’s been a long time coming!
