Honours split as Sasaki and Kings play out epic draw.
This rivalry for 3rd place has often been volatile, physical and verbal in recent weeks….. But despite such an intense rivalry, the match was played in excellent spirits all night!
With 3 players to call on, Nicholas, Michael and William turned out for the home side, and Nick and Guy teamed up with Division one maestro, Jacob Midson.
William gave Jacob a harsh welcome, rolling out 3-0, before Guy did the same to Michael.
Battle of the Nicks was a topsy turvy affair, with Howard taking the first 2, before Wong found his excellent form to win it in 5.
The doubles was a rematch of the Open Semi Finals, with an identical scoreline!
Credit to Nicholas and Michael for somehow winning the first set when down by 5, and sneaking the 4th set 17-15. But it wasn’t to be, and the Open Doubles Champions of Howard and Sparrow ran out 11-9 winners in the 5th.
Jacob was starting to find his range against Michael, but it was too little too late in Match 5, and Michael won the 3rd set 14-12 for the win.
After William went full “lob” mode against Guy and lost in 3 comfortable sets, he went on the offensive against Howard, and raced into a 2-1 lead with barely a lob in sight.
But Howard ground it out in the next 2, closing off another close 5 setter for the win.
Jacob was very unlucky not to take Nicholas to 5 and with scores of 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 12-10, it shows that he’s a player that can certainly mix it with the heavyweights!
Lastly it was Michael and Nick to close off the match, and despite a valiant effort from the Sasaki captain, it was Howard who was victorious and the honours split on the night.
5 points still separate Sasaki and Kings, and whilst Kings finish their season next week against Champions elect, Spinners, Sasaki have Pumas and LB Van Hire to play as the season finishes.
Advantage Sasaki, but stranger things have happened!
