CAPTAIN CHERRY TAKES SPINNERS TO DRAMATIC TITLE VICTORY

On a dramatic evening at the end of a dramatic season, Alan Cherry won the LAST GAME OF THE SEASON to give Spinners the title.

The evening had lot’s of twists and turns, with Spinners playing Monarchs on one table with second placed Sasaki playing third placed Bandits on the next.

At the start of the evening, Spinners were 1 point ahead of Sasaki, with Bandits only 1 further point behind.

Sasaki got a fast start and moved into a 3-1 lead including a crucial doubles. On the next table , Spinners match was taking longer and Spinners were leading 2-1. However an Ian Johnson inspired Monarchs took the doubles with Martin Hall, to give Sasaki a real chance of taking the title.

With Bandits Matt Evans completing a maximum and Jamie Hendy beating Matt Horrocks, the game reached 4-4.

For Spinners, Tim Cheek beat Tomek Nowakowski and Alan Cherry beat Martin Hall, and although Ian Johnson beat Gary Jones, Spinners were leading 4-3 and had the advantage.

So Bandits had to win the last 2 games to overhaul Sasaki and keep their hopes alive, however Dan Smalley beat Jamie Hendy to end Bandits hopes.

Tim Cheek then beat Martin Hall, but Matt Horrocks beat Mick Wilkins for the 1st time to secure a 6-4 win to keep their hopes alive.

So this meant that Spinners needed 1 of the last 2 to win the title.

However Tomek beat Gary Jones in 4 sets, to set up an unbelievable finish.

It was Alan Cherry for Spinners against Ian Johnson for Monarchs who was giving it everything to help Sasaki.

Alan won the first leg, but the second was crucial and could have gone either way, but Alan took it to go 2-0 up.

However the 3rd leg saw yet another twist with Ian blasting Alan off the table 11-1.

The 4th leg was close with a few nets and edges increasing the drama, the score reached 9-9. Ian then launched another Exocet but it hit the net and went long, giving Alan match point. He made no mistake to take a maximum and give Spinners the title by 1 point!
