Kings triumph over TopSpin in battle of the Wordsmiths
There have been many literary feuds in the past thousand years.
Robert Greene and William Shakespeare…… Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, and John Keats and Lord Byron to name a few.
But none have had quite the local impact as Nick Howard vs Dave Wackrill.
Backing up Nick with their own poetic bars was Craig Brown and Guy Sparrow, with Merve Kelly and Russell Penn dropping some beats to support Dave.
The chance to claim the coveted title of “King Wordsmith” was up first in match one.
Dave had initially suggested a rap battle in front of the packed out MK Centre (“8 mile” style……).
Some say they even saw pages of rhymes prepared in his bag…..
Luckily, nothing rhymes with Nick……
The match itself was more “Comedy of Errors” (look it up, it’s Shakespeare’s shortest play and quite fitting here), than “Hamlet”, as Dave fought valiantly in end one, before losing the next 2 ends to 5.
Guy was in scintillating “post Covid” form against Russell Penn, a man who has given many a Premier player nightmares for multiple reasons!
Not least is his ability to disregard spin like Shakespeare disregarded rules….. But it wasn’t to be tonight, as Guy was never troubled.
After 46 unbeaten ends for the Kings, it was Merve Kelly who finally notched up a game against the Kings when playing Craig Brown.
In fact, he took it to 5, and Craig needed to dig deep to come through 11-7 in the 5th.
The biggest (and only) upset of the night came in the doubles.
Guy and Nick haven’t been troubled for a long time, but the pair of Kelly and Penn not only came through victorious, they did so from 10-6 down in the 5th.
A fantastic comeback that came out of the blue!
There wasn’t a huge amount to observe after that if truth be told.
All 3 Kings players turned on the style when required and only Russells solitary games against both Howard and Brown were the dents in the Kings armour on the night.
It’s very early days, and the Kings face Sasaki, Spinners and Monarchs in the next 3 games.
But 38 from 40 points is a great start from the Greenleys team!
