MERVYN TO THE RESCUE AGAIN

Another good win for the Topspin trio thanks to a flying start which saw us 4-1 up at half-time.  Mervyn Kelly continued his heroics from last week and although perhaps it was too early to expect another singles treble (just the one logged in his last 28 matches) his form remained strong as he bagged a brace, featured in the doubles win and provided a vital ‘assist’.

That doubles set was a real humdinger, probably the best of the night.  No-one believed in defending and it was all hit and counter hit action which could have gone either way with the ball whizzing about all over the place.  But at 8-8 in the 5th we were very fortunate to say the least.  Russell Penn got lucky nets twice over to take the score on to 10-8 and was going for the hat-trick with yet another when somehow Alex Du Noyer scrambled the ball back into play only for partner Richard Hardy to clip the net again on his next strike, with the ball tantalisingly ballooning and dropping beyond the far end of the table this time.

I had a big slice of good fortune too in my second singles as I was all at sea when losing 11-2 in the opening game to the wiles of Leigh Hurkett and happily resigned to a heavy defeat in the next few minutes.  But Mervyn had other ideas and a quick word in my ear at change of ends resulted in a tactical switch of play which turned the tables spectacularly.  Thanks Merve!!

At 5-3 up the match was still in the balance though with Mervyn to play the famously unpredictable Richard and myself to go up against their top man Alex, who had certainly showed some classy stuff in his repertoire in his earlier games. But we came through these tests with flying colours.

So, with the only treble, Man of the Match must be me.

Next week we take on top of the table MK Phoenix, who are the team that we have played the most number of times in our short 5 and a bit season existence.  This will be our 11th meeting with them and we stand at 6-4 up from our previous encounters.  No drawn matches so far between us.
