VAN MEN SENT PACKIN’ AT LAST
Hurray! My Topspin side are celebrating our first win over Van Hire since 2017 after a run of 5 consecutive defeats, including the 3 meetings last year when we were both in the Premier. So far this campaign though, the respective teams have enjoyed vastly differing fortunes. Topspin are flying whilst Van Hire are struggling in the drop zone to Div 2. And so it continued here.
The Leighton Buzzard club team came to MK with an overload of players due to a misunderstanding in their ranks. Andy Fiske was the man who missed out while Sophie Storey, Mateusz Browarnik and skipper Fabrice Spelta featured in the match. Topspin went with Jit Pitamber, Russell Penn and myself this time.
Fabrice started against me. Last time we met I was annihilated with some fast hitting and it looked like going the same way again as he raced into an 8-1 lead in the opening game within the first minute. But, thankfully, the onslaught was unsustained and I managed to turn the match around and establish the pattern of home wins for the evening.
Russell looked down and out in his opening set when trailing 8-3 in the decider against Mateusz but you can never write him off and he duly bounced back brilliantly to snatch the win at deuce. However, his luck ran out in the penultimate set of the match when Fabrice beat him 13-11 in the 5th to snatch Van Hire’s sole success.
Jit looked untroubled throughout as he polished off his opponents with straight game wins. A good night’s work for the Lutonian as he prepares for a weekend tournament in Preston. Best of luck to Jit there.
