Super-sub Jim to the rescue
After losing10-0 in successive matches to promotion chasing Greenleys Princes and Chackmore Hasbeens, and with Charity Wong unavailable, OU Shockwave were expecting another tough night against NP Lagondas, the 3rd team in the promotion hunt, The home team had their own problems, as both Sue Lewis and Tony Ardis succumbed to illness on the morning of the match and, with Glen Davison committed to a match in the Towcester league, Chris Horn and Mike Howard anticipated giving away valuable points. Fortunately for the Lagondas, the evergreen Jim Brogan volunteered to play in two matches, almost leaping over the barriers between the tables in his eagerness to take part. Mike Howard opened the scoring for the home team with a 3-leg win against Yifan Liu, the lead being doubled when Chris Horn beat Marcus Fung in similar fashion. Having lost his opening set for NP Vanquish on the adjoining table, Jim Brogan then faced off against Charles Tien. who won in 4 entertaining legs to give Shockwave their first set win this month.The doubles followed, with the Chris/Mike pairing beating Yifan/Charles in 4 legs.. This was the 11th successive doubles win for Lagondas, and 14th overall. Chris followed this up with another straightforward win against Yifan. The remaining sets were played out of order. Jim secured a draw for the home team with a 4-leg win over Marcus. Charles took a 4-leg win against Mike before the latter beat Marcus, again in 3 legs, to secure the match win. Chris and Charles played set 9 on the night to determine who would finish the evening with a maximum. Chris won the first leg, before Charles responded to take a 2-1 lead. Chris fought back to take the 4th and seemed to have the final leg under contriol. However Charles overcame a 2-6 deficit to win the final leg 11-8. Jim rounded the evening off with a 4-leg win over Yifan, before playing his final set against Greenleys Valiants, the division 3 league promotion chasers, to earn a total of 4 wins on the night! With Steve Paice also playing well, NP Vanquish on the neighbouring table secured a draw, their best result for some weeks, against Greenleys Valiants who needed a maximum from their loan player Tim Welch of division 4 to maintain their promotion challenge.
