TOPSPIN TAKE A ‘TANNING’ BUT STILL MAKE IT TO CHRISTMAS NUMBER ONE
Back to back defeats are hardly the stuff champions are made of, but for now my Topspin side are top of the tree and will have remained so for over 100 days by the time we play again in January.
Our genial OU hosts changed both the date and venue of this fixture, as we played at the club studio on this occasion with Patrick Wong. Andy Tan and Ning He facing off against Jit Pitamber, Mervyn Kelly and myself.
The Primes, shooting for top position themselves, certainly made it tough going all the way for Topspin as we had to equalize the match score 4 times over before finally capitulating in the last 2 sets of the night (both in straight games too). But by then Jit had made the Christmas top spot safe by winning our 4th set of the night.
A terrific hat-trick by Andy, with just one game dropped, was supported by a brace from Patrick and a single from Ning which saw the Primes home. In response Topspin‘s Jit bagged a brace, Mervyn one and the pair took the doubles between them (incidentally taking them to 2nd place in the doubles averages). Zero for me but a magnificent match nonetheless.
Man of the match : Andy Tan
