Shockwave grab Draw, despite flying start for Hawks

Open University Shockwave came into this match in eighth place, and entertained fourth placed Mursley Hawks, and it was Hawks who got off to a flying start.  However, set 1 was a real nail-biter, as Charles Tien and Martin Johnson traded games, with neither able get their attacking game going, and inevitably it came down to a vital couple of points at the end, which just went Martin's way at 11-9, which also ended a streak of eight deciding sets lost in a row for Hawks!  Mick O'Mahoney doubled Hawks' lead, beating Charity Wong in straight games, and Ian Spanswick extended the lead to 3-0 with victory over Yifan Liu, in another fifth game.

Mick and Ian took on Charles and Chairty in the doubles, and Hawks were soon 2-0 up, but Shockwave battled back, and after both pairs had missed multiple chances, sneaked game 3 at 17-15, and then went on to win the final two close games, to open their account, as once again, Hawks found winning a fifth game difficult.

Charity maintained her winning record against Martin, despite trailing early on in games 1 and 2, to narrow the Hawks lead to 3-2.  Charles took on the baton, and evened the match score at 3-3, with a straight games win over Ian, as his attacking started to hit the target.  Mick put Hawks back ahead, comfortably beating Yifan, but Charity again evened things up by beating Ian in four games.  Martin ensured that Hawks could not lose, by beating Yifan in three games, leaving Mick against Charles to decide the final score, and again, after two very close games, it was Charles who found his range the better, to claim his second win of the night and deny Mick a first treble, on a night when no-one won all their sets, to finish with a match score of 5-5.  Despite only drawing, the result moved Shockwave up a place, whilst Hawks remain in fourth.
