Depleted Kings fight back though the strength of Wood.
Depleted Kings fight back though the strength of Wood.
For the second time in 2 weeks, the Kings were down to 2 people for their league match. Another situation out of their control as Guy Sparrow was stranded on a closed M1, moving no where fast.
It was down to the double act of Howard and Wood to take on the trio of Cherry, Cheek and Jones.
It’s been a slow start to the campaign for Cherry - Suffering unexpected losses in multiple leagues. Reports have it that a back injury is hampering the experienced veteran, and he’s been limited to only 550 matches across all competitions in the early part of the season…… Reports may or may not be accurate……
The night was kicked off with Howard and Cheek - A fairly straightforward 3-0 win for the Greenleys captain on paper - But Cheek let a 9-3 lead in the 2nd disappear, before succumbing 15-13 - The first and 3rd sets were to 4 and 7 respectively.
Jordan was up against the wounded Cherry next, but if there was an injury to be seen, it was well hidden, and Cherry rolled through the match for the loss of 14 points.
Nick and Gary followed, and it was another one sided 3 setter - Jones showing plenty of firepower at times, but consistency let him down in all 3 sets.
Tim and Jordan put on the only 5 setter of the night. After Wood took the opener, Cheek fought back to win the next 2. However, a revitalised Wood stormed through the 4th to take the match into a 5th set, before dominating the early part of that set, and never looking back. Taking an early 4 point lead, she never relinquished it, and ran out a 3-2 winner.
Howard fancied his chances against Cherry this time around - Having beaten him in the final game of the season in 2016/17 (to stop him winning the Percy Hyde by 0.3%), they’ve had some close battles in the league, and the summer league.
However, Cherry was keen to get home to catch the X Factor on repeat, and in the blink of an eye, they were shaking hands, with Alan barely having to break a sweat.
Wood and Jones were the last singles to be played, and after having a torrid start to the season, the Kings can start to see why they signed the Northampton ace this year.
Jones took the first to 9, before some relentless attacking and blocking from Wood pipped the 2nd 12-10, before winning the 3rd to 7 and 4th to 9. A fantastic come back after some hard weeks for the MK Women’s Champion.

The doubles was as equally one sided as some of the singles - The mixed doubles champions of 2018 proved far too good for the experienced Cherry and Jones, winning to 4, 5 and 6.
What looked like a certain win for Spinners, turned out to be a tough draw in the end.
For those wondering, Sparrow finally returned home at 10:45pm.
