Read it and weep Wilkins - Kings move up to 3rd!
OK, so the Kings might have played one more match than Sasaki…. And have Spinners, Monarchs and Sasaki left to play (Sasaki have Spinners, Pumas, Van Hire and Kings, so they are still firm favourites for the coveted 3rd place) but the Greenleys Kings remarkable turnaround from bottom to 3rd is complete - For this week at least.
MK Open Championship 2nd Seed, all around good guy and terrible umpire (), Ricky Taiwo brought his team of Ade Odetayo and Darren Ward to face off against the trio of Nick Howard, Jordan Moss and MK Singles Runner Up, Guy Sparrow.
Jordan had to play her three matches and leave, which was quite the achievement in a Greenleys Hall that had the air temperature of Jamaica on a hot summers day - Clearly Greenleys aren’t feeling the squeeze on Gas prices!
After Ricky avenged his earlier league defeat to Jordan in 4, Moss went on to beat Ade and Darren by the same scoreline for two vital victories.
Ricky claims that Nick Howard is the only person he hasn’t beaten in the Winter League (who’s active), and that statement will continue until next season as Howard ran out a 3-0 victor. Although Taiwo had chances in each game, and was up by 4 or more every single time.
Guy and Ade produced the first 5 setter of the match (out of 4!) finally winning 11-9 in the 5th, before Howard overcame Darren who was playing extremely well to win in 5 as well - The Kings captain coming back from match points down in the 4th.
Ricky got even more revenge on Sparrow in the 3rd 5 setter in a row coming through 11-7 in the 5th (having lost in the league and the Open Championship), and Nick beat Ade a little more comfortably 3-0 to complete his hat-trick.
Guy got full value for money in yet another 5 setter, as he succumbed to Darren Ward 12-10 in the 5th, but he teamed up with his MK Open Doubles Champion Nick Howard to beat Ricky and Darren 3-1 in the final match of the night.
The Kings have now won 6 from 7 in 2022 vs the 1 from 8 in 2021!
