The evening started with a great set to watch between Graham Silversides and Chris Horn, with some tremendous forehand topspin from both players, with Chris winning in 4. That was followed by as clear a victory as the scores suggest for the attack of Mateusz Browarnik against Glen Davison. Immediately following his win, Mat checked his phone and said that he’d have to leave, as he needed to be home with his wife, who was imminently expecting their second child. As he’d already played, it meant that the Spitfires couldn’t draft someone in at the last minute so Lagondas were gifted two points.
Next up was the ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ set between Andy King and Mike Howard-the ‘spoiler’ players on each side. It was as cagey a set as you can imagine, although Andy put in quite a number of his forehand hits and Mike managed a few of my own. Mike was ahead by 2 or more points almost throughout the match, but Andy kept his head and kept coming back and, in retrospect, Mike lost the final points of the first and third legs by attempting to attack, rather than for Andy to have won the points outright.
The doubles was a very close set between Graham and Andy for the Spitfires and what was effectively a scratch pair of Chris and Mike for Lagondas, as it's several years sincethey were in the same team. The first leg was won easily by the home team, but the remaining 4 legs were as close as the scores suggest, with Chris and Mike winning the final leg 11-8 to even up the match score.
The rest of the legs were played out of order. Graham beat Glen and Andy beat Chris, each in 4 legs, to put the home side 4 -2 up. Glen was unlucky against Graham. Having lost the first 2 legs easily, he fought back well in the 3rd and only just lost the 4th in deuce. Had he won that, he would possibly have had both the confidence and teh momentum to take the final leg, but it was not to be. Andy coped very well with the topspin shots of Chris, who could not find a way through Andy's dogged defence and forehand hits in the 3rd and 4th legs.
Mike then had a battle against Graham. The first 2 legs were shared with easy wins, but after that it was nip and tuck. Mike was several points clear in the last leg, but Graham came back to 9-9 before Mike managed to grab the last two points. The final played set was Andy against Graham and it was a comprehensive win for Andy, who finished with a fine maximum. Spitfires won 5 of the 8 sets played on the night and it’s likely that Mateusz would have won at least one of his sets against Chris and me, so the Spitfires were probably denied a win. As it was, Lagondas were lucky to come away with a draw.
Lagondas have a 2 point lead at the top of the table, but they play Greenleys Princes and Chackmore Hasbeens in the next 2 matches, and as both those teams have a postponed match still to play, there’s likely to be a change in the league leader by Christmas.
