MONARCHS LOSE THEIR CROWN TO BANDITS
A very different Monarchs side travelled to MK Centre this week, with Dan flanked by Tomas and assisted by Ollie from Division 1 high fliers Warriors.
Bandits fielded their fourth different combination, with Jamie, Matt and James playing for the first time together due to injuries for Mike and Dave.
A close match ensued, with Bandits taking the first two thanks to Jamie and Matt beating Tomas and Ollie respectively. James then went down to Dan with little effort from the Monarchs top man.
The doubles was a close affair, going to deuce in the fifth, with Dan and Tomas coming out of top to level at 2-2.
Matt beat Tomas to make it 3-2 to Bandits before Dan raced to a two nil lead against Jamie, undeterred, Jamie sneaked the third and then took the fourth to level the games.
The two players could not be split, and with Jamie 12-11 up, Dan played a cross court backhand that clipped the net and then took an edge. The whole room took a sharp intake of breath. Dan took the next point, and his serve, which had served him perfectly all night inexplicably went long. The tension didn’t drop, and in the end Jamie took the game and the vital point 16-14.
4-2 to Bandits, until an impressive Ollie took James 3-1 with some great looping and backhand smashes. He is surely someone we will see regularly in the Premier Division next year.
Matt beat Dan with some great play from both ends of the table to secure the draw for Bandits, but James didn’t get out of first gear all night and lost in three to Tomas before Jamie went on against Ollie. The youngsters fought out a tight first two games with honours even before Ollie took the third easily.
But one thing we have learned is that Jamie loves a battle and he took the fourth comfortably to take it to the decider and then closed out the win.
So Monarchs suffer their second defeat this season, perhaps the biggest upset since Wrexham knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup in 1992?
Player of the match, Jamie Hendy.
