KINGS OVERCOME SPINNERS THANKS TO BRILLIANT BROWN
Monsoon season is upon us, and MK Spinners were hosting Greenleys Kings at the same time that Greenleys Monarchs were hosting LB Van Hire.
As a reminder, Kings were 10 points ahead of Monarchs going into this week, with the 2 Greenleys teams facing off against each other in the season finale next week.
The familiar trio of Alan, Tim and Jecu met the ever present trio of Guy, Craig and Nick.
Craig showed little signs of those “end of season nerves” as he dismantled Jecu in 3, before Nick and Tim had a barnstorming 5 set classic.
The Cheekmeister had beaten Howard in their last encounter at Greenleys, but it was sweet revenge for Nick who took the 5th comfortably.
Guy met an in form Cherry to pull one back for Spinners, before Alan paired up with Jecu to edge out 3 close games of doubles against Brown and Howard.
Craig had to dig deep in his match with Tim, who was having an excellent night despite ending it winless! 3 of the 4 ends went to deuce, with Brown sneaking through in the end.
Jecu halted the Kings title celebrations against Guy, winning in 4, whilst on the adjoining table, Alan vanquished his 3-0 final loss to Howard, but returning the favour - 3 ends of deuce, but it was Cherry who took this one, and the season head to head finishes at 2-2 between the 2 captains.
Spinners were 4-3 up, and it looked like the title was going to be decided next week.
However, Guy found some fantastic form to beat Tim in 3, whilst Craig rolled back the years to play his best match all season in tearing apart Alan’s defence.
A straight sets victory for Brown against his former team, put the Kings tantalising close to the trophy.
Nick and Jecu finished the night off, with the former doing just enough to win it in 3, and take the overall match by 6 points to 4.
Over at Greenleys, Leighton Buzzard put on a masterclass, showing just what firepower they have at their disposal thrashing the leagues runners up, 7-3.
Javier with a hat trick, Biao with 2 and Fabrice with 1 (they also won the doubles.
Monarchs are now 13 points behind, with just the 1 match to play.
It’s been a fantastic season for the Kings, who won the title before the pandemic stopped play, but fought off relegation in the season it returned (last season).
The new team of Brown, Sparrow and Howard have proved to be a winning formula, and long may it continue!
