Set of the Season?
Third placed Mursley Hawks took on seventh placed Leighton Buzzard Spitfires, with both teams caught up in close battles in Division 2. Hawks are still involved in the promotion battle, albeit slightly behind their main rivals (once games in hand are taken into account), whilst Spitfires are looking to pick up a few more points to avoid the second relegation place.
Hawks have been getting off to good starts recently, and once again they started off well, going 3-1 up after the doubles, chiefly due to the current good form of Mick O'Mahony, who won his opening singles and teamed up with Martin Johnson to record their fourth straight doubles win, against Barry Hammond and Andy King, in straight games. Martin had earlier beaten Graham Silversides in four games, with the Spitfires win coming from Andy King against Ian Spanswick in three. However, it was not as starightforward as that sounds for Mick, as his set against Barry was a tremendous battle, with some superb rallies, and prompted the comment from my team mate that it was the best set he'd seen in Division 2 all season, as Mick and Barry traded games up to 2-2 all, with both players attacking and defending brilliantly, but in the end there had to be only one winner, and it was Mick's forehand loops and good serving which just got him over the line, at 11-8 in the decider.
Barry did get on better in his other two singles, though, always just ahead against Martin, to win in four, and holding off Ian in a close first leg before taking it in straight games. Meanwhile, Mick continued his recent winning run, taking him to eight singles wins in a row, as he beat both Andy in three and Graham in four, whilst Graham picked up his one win on the night against Ian, holding off a late challenge at 12-10 in the third.
That left the score at 5-4 to Hawks with just Martin versus Andy to go, to decide the final outcome. Andy started well, and probably should've won the opener, but Martin sneaked it at 12-10. Andy didn't repeat that mistake in game 2, and levelled it, but Martin got his hits going better to take game 3 and almost game 4, before Andy returned the favour of game 1 by sneaking this one 12-10, to take it to a decier. Unfortunately for Andy, it was one way traffic in game 5, as Hawks thus notched up a third consecutive win at 6-4.
The result hasn't really affected the League positions too much, so with most matches this season being close contests, the battles will likely go down to the wire?
