Match Report (by Martin Johnson)
In the corresponding fixture in week 2 of the season, Division 2 leaders Milton Keynes Sharks ran out easy 8-2 winners over fifth placed Mursley Hawks, with the main resistance on that occasion coming from Mark Meagrow, Hawks' emergency reserve. However, whilst Hawks had regular Martin Johnson back, instead of Mark, to join David Bartlett and Ian Spanswick, Sharks also saw team changes, with no Rupert Geryling or Pedro Anastacio, but instead they featured Jakin Greyling and up from Division 3 form player, Chris Paddon, to join Derick Rodrigues.
The early exchanges suggested things might be similar, despite Sharks being slightly under strength, as although Martin won in three close games against the out of practice, Jakin, Derick dispatched David in straight games to extend his winning run to 13 sets, and then Chris beat Ian in a see-saw five gamer, to put Sharks 2-1 up. The doubles saw a change of fortune, however, as Martin & Ian combined well to become the first team to beat Sharks in the doubles, this season, in straight games, against the untried Derick & Chris pairing. Ian played very solidly to then beat Jakin in three, and put Hawks back ahead, which was followed by a surprise, rare, loss by Derick, against Martin, in straight games, only Derick's scond loss of the season, to see Hawks move to 4-2 up. Chris looked to be swinging things back Sharks way as he went 2-0 up against David, but David battled back, finally winning in the deciding leg, to make it 5-2 to Hawks, which also ended Sharks run of seven consectuive wins. Derick refound his form to beat Ian in three, but that was the last success for Sharks, as Hawks claimed the final two sets, each by virtue of fifth game wins, to finish as 7-3 winners. David beat Jakin, despite a spirited fight back from 2-0 down by Jakin, where he briefly found some of his old form, before it deserted him in the deicder, and then finally a frustrating repeat for Chris, of going 2-0 up, this time against Martin, only to again lose in five in the end!
Sharks still have a good lead at the top of the table, but depending on other results, thier lead may well narrow a little bit, whilst Hawks move from fifth to a temporary second place, until the remaining matches take place.
