Match Report (courtesy of Martin Johnson)
First match of the season for a new look Mursley Hawks, at home to a partly new look Milton Keynes Tornadoes.
Hawks are effectively the remains of the Swallows and Hawks teams who finished 6th & 7th last season, but minus Peter Sear, who has dropped down a Division (and taken the Swallows name with him), and minus Mervyn Phillips & Andy King, who have moved to other Clubs, but plus Frank Beck, who has moved from the Little Horwood Club. Tornadoes, who are the highest finishing team from last season, as they finished 3rd, have lost Charlie Gray from their lineup from last season.
Tornadoes started the stronger, with Tanmay Tijare serving well and blasting winners past Frank Beck in the opener, to take it in three legs. In the second game up, Nicholas Wong edged the first leg against Martin Johnson, despite being behind early on, but Martin evened up things with an 11-1 win in the second, however Nicholas upped the tempo, to take leg three, and despite again being behind in the fourth, finished strongly to put Tornadoes 2-0 up. Matthew Curley played number three for Tornadoes, and hit some excellent serves and winners to just take the first game against Hawks' reserve, Graham Butcher, but Graham dug in and managed to edge through three very close legs to give the home team their first point. Tornadoes soon pulled ahead again, though, as Nicholas / Tanmay were easy double winners against Graham / Martin. Next Tanmay took on Martin, and in their usual see saw game, it almost inevitably went the distance, but at 6-2 to Martin in the decider, it looked all over, but Tanmay finished very well, as Martin's returns also started missing, to take it 11-7, and put Tornadoes 4-1 up. Frank narrowed the match score to 4-2, against Matthew, though all three legs were really close, before Nicholas produced the best comeback of the night against Graham, as from two legs down, he started finding his range on his forehands, to come through in five games. Martin got another one back for Hawks with a four legs win over Matthew, and Graham used his guile and experience to just edge through against a subdued Tanmay in three very tight legs, to narrow the score to 5-4 to Tornadoes. Frank took on Nicholas in the final set, and despite some more close legs, could not prevent another win for Nicholas, who duly completed his maximum, and wrapped up a 6-4 win for Tornadoes.
