Prem Match report : Greenleys Monarchs 7 MK Topspin 3
RECORD BREAKING HISTORY MAKERS
Topspin set a new record here for the oldest team ever to compete in a MK Premier League match, our collective ages being 212 years. I know it’s not much compared to some teams in the lower divisions but still pretty good going, I think, for the top one where we are competing with County players most weeks. So, plenty of experience to fall back on alongside the creaking bones and broken bodies.
Yes, my Topspin team are back at the top table and mixing it once again with the big boys. Last time we were here we had been promoted alongside clubmates Phoenix before being immediately relegated with them too. As neither of our squads have been strengthened (so far anyway) the same fate awaits us both again, the yawning gap in standard between the Premier and Division 1 being so huge. Such is life in the Milton Keynes Table Tennis League.
A nice match to kick off with only one man missing out on a win or two. Perennial runners-up Monarchs were our first opponents of the new campaign, and we brought in sub Andy Smith from Div 1 in place of holiday making Mervyn Kelly to play alongside skipper Russell Penn and myself. The opposition went with team captain Martin Hall and the two Daves, Beddall and Tiplady.
The legacy of another fantastic Summer League season at MKTTC must have loomed large to Andy as only last week, in the final round of matches, he came within a hair’s breadth of beating Martin Hall, his first opponent of this new season. Not so here though As much as Andy huffed and puffed, he never got to grips with Martin’s fast game and was sent floundering to the four corners of the court time and time again chasing shadows. Then his next opponent was Dave Beddell, who he had spent most Monday nights of the Summer partnering in the 2-a-side competition. So, after endless weeks of knocking up with him before those matches, he got to play against him in a proper match. Another defeat followed but fortunately Andy was saving his best performance till last, a masterclass of defending against the highly rated Dave Tiplady. What a great win!!
Skipper Russell had terrific Summer League victories himself over both Martin and Dave Beddall but could not reproduce his best form again here.
I had a good match, delighted to beat Dave Beddall and Martin, both in 4 games and, by request I may add, have been asked to nominate myself as ‘Man of the Match’ this time round. A rare occurrence, I assure you.
