Brilliant Biao brings Leighton Buzzard Van Hire’s first win!
Joining Biao for the home team, Leighton Buzzard Van Hire fielded Paul Haigh and Paul Savins, who was playing his first match for 13 years!
Dusting off their passports to cross county lines for the Kings was Nick Howard, Steve Silk and Guy Sparrow - A combined journey time of almost 3 hours!
Thankfully, it was a quick night with all but 2 of the matches only lasting 3 games.
Paul Savins should be very happy with his 3 matches. Despite going down fighting 3-0 in all of them, he showed all the qualities of a very good player just waiting to get some practice in!
Paul Haigh was caught cold by Nick Howard in his opening match, but brilliantly fended off Guy Sparrow and Steve Silk in 3 games each.
But the night belonged to the best selling author, Biao Wang.
When you have sold over 4,000 copies of a book worldwide, playing Table Tennis in a cold cellar in Leighton Buzzard must be a big comedown from the glitz and glamour of the red carpet and award shows!
But Biao was absolutely unplayable tonight - Powerful hitting off both wings suited the conditions perfectly, and if truth be told, he wasn’t troubled at all.
From a personal POV, Biao is easily one of the most improved players of the year, and it was a joy to watch (even on the losing side!)
What ended up being the decider on the night was the only match to go to 5 - The doubles.
After Nick and Guy saved 4 match points in a row during game 4 to take the end 12-10, Biao and Paul Haigh were too good to win the 5th and ultimately, secure the 6-4 win on the night.
The 2 teams will meet again very soon, as their re-arranged match is scheduled to be played either during the week of the 20th December, or the first week in January.
