PROMOTED HASBEENS FORCE HARD EARNED DRAW IN CLOSE ENCOUNTER
My Topspin team were delighted to re-sign former colleague Jit Pitamber for the new campaign. Jit played for us in our inaugural season (2015/16) and we have courted his return to the Topspin fold ever since. We certainly needed his skills for this opener and he duly delivered. Skipper Russell Penn and myself completed the team. Chackmore came with their regular side of Bub Burman, Andy Whitehead and Sam Willett.
Newly promoted Hasbeens, co-incidentally, were also our opening opponents on the last occasion they were promoted to this Division in 2017. Back then we went home with an easy 9-1 victory. Different story now though as we struggled to a hard fought draw in an exciting encounter. After shooting into a 2-0 lead we shared the spoils in the next 6 sets before the Hasbeens claimed the final 2 sets in close 5-gamers.
Jit won all his sets with just a single game dropped. I was looking to emulate that performance but a feisty Bub had other ideas, coming from 2 games down in the final set to snatch a draw for his side by rolling out the last 3 games of the evening. Bad night for Russell though, who went home winless. Many thanks to our genial guests for such a close encounter. As usual we were the last match to finish at the centre.
Super stat : Topspin’s opening set victory was our 600th singles MK League win (which is a 48.5% success rate and gives us an outside chance of making it to 50% by the end of the season)
Man of the match : Jit Pitamber
