Match Report - Division 2 - Mursley Hawks versus Little Horwood Wooden Tops
Fourth placed Hawks, on a run of four matches without a win, took on fifth placed Wooden Tops, on a run of five consecutive 3-7 losses, and indeed eight 3-7 losses in their last nine matches (sandwiching a 9-1 win!), and are embroiled in a battle to avoid the second relegation spot.
Things started the better for Hawks, who moved into a 3-0 lead, although John Sharp was unlucky to lose the opener against Martin Johnson, after leading 2-0 in legs, and 6-1 up in the third, but a battling fightback saw Martin finally edge it in five. Hawks teammate, Mick O'Mahony, beat an out of sorts Andy Hooper in straight games, before Hawks' captain David Bartlett beat Paul Reynolds over four close games. Wooden Tops finally got on the scorecard, as John and Paul edged the doubles 11-8 in the decider, to inflict a first doubles defeat on Martin and Mick. The next two sets were shared, as Mick beat John over four close games, and then Paul did likewise against Martin, to take the score to 4-2. However, Hawks then forged ahead to finally take the match 8-2, although John took David to a very close fifth game and Andy took Martin to deuce in the fourth leg.
The win for Hawks leaves them still trailing the leading three teams, and although they have one match in hand, they almost certainly are too far back to grab a promotion spot. Wooden Tops, meanwhile, have a battle on their hands, as the two teams who'd been just below the both won this week, to push Wooden Tops back to seventh place, four points adrift of their two rivals, with just two matches to go - although they do have slightly the easier remaining fixtures, in theory. Individually, Mick extended his run of singles wins to fourteen, the longest sequence of wins in the division, this season.
