Blades Sharpen Up !
Milton Keynes Blades have largely been the whipping boys in Division 2, so far this season, struggling to field a full team most weeks, but they have recruited an extra player, and were finally able to play three players (without a reserve) for the first time this season against Mursley Hawks, as Kareem Omar joined regulars Bill Tyler and Mark Thomas, and they were hoping to build on thier first draw of the season, last week.
However, early on things looked ominous for them, as they soon found themselves 4-0 behind, and 2-0 down in set 5, after the Hawks trio of Martin Johnson, Ian Spanswick and David Bartlett had rattled off 3-0 wins in the opening three sets, followed by a four game victory in the doubles as Ian and Martin beat Mark and Bill.
Ian looked to be about to make it 5-0 in the match, but Bill battled back from two legs down to complete a 3-2 win, to put Blades on the board. Two deuce games were shared as Kareem played Martin, but Kareem won the next two games to narrow the match score to 4-2, and Mark made it closer still, with some superb hitting to defeat David in four games. The comeback was completed as Kareem claimed his second win of the night against Ian, as the match score reached 4-4.
David halted the comeback in set 9, overcoming tough resistance from Bill in four games, to edge Hawks back in front, however Mark continued his fine attacking in set 10 against Martin, to win in four fast-paced legs, and so make the final score 5-5, a scond consecutive draw for both teams.
