Match Report (by Martin Johnson)
Third placed Newport Pagnell Lagondas were the visitors against fifth placed Mursley Hawks, with Lagondas on a three match winning streak / seven match unbeaten run, compared to Hawks having lost their last two matches, however it was Hawks who took the early lead as Martin Johnson defeated Roy Read in three close games. Tony Ardis evened things up with a straight games win over Ian Spanswick, and Chris Horn put the visitors in front with his win over David Bartlett, though he was pushed to five games, as David battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2, only for Chris to pull away in game five. Another five gamer ensued in the doubles, this time with Martin & Ian (Hawks) coming through in the decider against Chris & Roy, to level the match again. Hawks opened up a two sets advantage, as Ian beat Roy in straight games and Martin edged out Chris in four tight games. Once again, Lagondas bounced back, as Tony again won in straight games against David, then Chris again went 2-0 up, but was again pushed to a decider, as he defeated a battling Ian in five games. David put Hawks ahead once more, 5-4, as he beat Roy in the fourth five gamer of the night, despite Roy pulling back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2, only to falter in the final leg. So, could Hawks end the Lagondas unbeaten run in the final set of the night? The answer was an emphatic NO, as Tony blitzed Martin from the off, to run out an easy winner in three very quick games, to end the night with honours even, as a 5-5 draw. Lagondas thus stretched their unbetaen run to eight matches, although their run of three wins was ended, whilst Hawks ended their run of two defeats!
