Match Report : Division 2 - Mursley Hawks (4th) versus Newport Pagnell Lagondas (=1st).
This was the third edition of this fixture, with just five League matches remaining for each team. The previous two matches had both been 5-5 draws, so the usual close match was expected, with Lagondas locked in battle with Greenleys Princes at the top of the table, and with Hawks trying to close down the growing gap to the three teams above them.
It was first blood to the visitors, with Glen Davison getting away in the deciding game against Martin Johnson, after four very close games, to put Lagondas 1-0 ahead. Chris Horn stormed through set 2 against Ian Spanswick, with his trademark forehand loop well in evidence, to double the lead, before David Bartlett finally put the home team on the scoresheet as he just edged through in a finely balanced five gamer against Sue Lewis. Sue got an element of revenge in the doubles, however, teaming up with Glen to defeat David and Martin, in yet another five gamer, to take her personal record in doubles to six out of six, this season.
Glen extended the Lagondas lead to 4-1, in a fourth five game set, again getting away in the deciding game, after a see saw battle with Ian over the first four. Martin then picked up his first ever singles win against Sue in set six, to give Hawks some hope, but the Lagondas lead moved to 5-2 as Chris overcame losing the first game to David, to win in four.
It looked like Lagondas were coasting to victory, as Ian struggled in game 1 against Sue in the next set, but he battled back from losing the opening game 2-11, to win in four games, returning the favour with an 11-2 fourth leg. David and Glen then had a battle royal, with David just coming through in four tight legs, to narrow the Lagondas lead to 5-4, and to set up the final set between Martin and Chris. It was Chris who set the pace, using his big forehand loops at every opportunity, and although Martin twice battled back from a game down, Chris eventually pulled ahead in the deciding game, and closed out the set to give Lagondas a 6-4 win.
The win for Lagondas keeps them well in the battle for top spot, just one point behind the leaders, Princes, who won 7-3 this week, but for Hawks, it leaves them an increasing distance behind the three leading teams, who all won this week, and a promotion spot is looking increasingly unlikely.
