Mursley Swallows 3 - 7 Milton Keynes Classics
A belated report, but what a match, with six sets going the full distance, and four of those going all the way to deuce in the fifth!
Roger Shelton took on Barbara Peters in the first set, with Barabara twice going ahead, only for Roger to twice level, with Barbara squeaking home 12-10 in the deciding game. Peter Sear was next up against Tom Tofield, and although Peter went two games up, Tom battled back, to finally win in the fifth. Yet another five gamer followed, as Martin Johnson took on Masoud Nassor, with Martin shading the opening two games, only for Masoud to find his range better to level, to herald a decider that saved the best to the last, with Masoud finally just edging it 15-13 in the fifth. Classics were soon 4-0 up, as John Paul joined Martin in the doubles, but it didn't change their fortunes, as the combination of Tom and Masoud were hitting well, and won three straight. Back to the singles, and yet another five gamer, this time Peter battling through against Barbara to take the decider at 11-7. The next was so nearly yet another five gamer, but Masoud edged game four 16-14 versus Roger, to win 3-1. However, it was back to the full distance, again, as Martin and Tom exchanged games, before Tom edged through at 12-10 in the fifth. Masoud extended the Classics lead to 7-1 with a rare straight games win over Peter. Martin then took on Barbara, but again, on it went to the decider, and indeed, all the way to deuce in the decider, before Martin finally clinched a deuce in the fifth, at the third attempt, edging home 12-10 after Barabara had held two set points! Roger then completed the 'comeback' by beating Tom after going a game down, taking the next three, well, to complete a final scoreline of 7-3 to Classics. A classic it was, in many way, with 44 legs played, 835 points played, with both Barbara and Martin playing the full quota of 15 singles legs, with Martin somehow managing to go to deuce in the fifth in all three of his singles sets!
