Last week, sixth placed Mursley Swallows lost 6-4 to struggling MK Blades, whilst third placed Milton Keynes Tornadoes have been on form with two big wins in the last two weeks, so a 5-5 draw was something of a surprise. Martin Johnson returned to form for Swallows with a treble, backed up by a win apiece from Peter Sear and Roger Shelton, whilst for Tornadoes there were two wins each for Charlie Gray and Tanmay Tijare, plus Tanmay teaming up with Nicholas Wong in the doubles to defeat Martin/Peter.
Martin started the night with a three game win over Nicholas, and these two players fortunes continued along the same lines all night, as the overall advantage ebbed to and fro as the evening progressed. Tanmay and Charlie seemed to be hitting winners at will against Peter and Roger, respectively, thus putting Tornadoes 3-1 up after the doubles win. Swallows hit back as Peter took the win over Nicholas and then Martin just squeaked past Charlie, after being two legs down, and in danger in leg 3, with the turning point probably the block of one of Charlie's big leftie forehands at 9-9, with Martin taking that game at deuce, and going on to complete the comeback win in five legs. Tanmay versus Roger was another titanic struggle, with this time the Tornadoes player just edging through at 13-11 in the decider, having been 2-1 down in legs, with some crushing forehand kills the highlight. Charlie again extended the away team's lead by beating Peter over three close legs, before Roger closed the gap to 5-4 by beating Nicholas. This left the two (so far) unbeaten players to battle it out, and despite Tanmay taking the first leg, Martin just did enough to take the next three, and so complete the draw. With second placed Hasbeens collecting another big win (8-2) on the adjacent table, it now looks like Tornadoes are too far adrift of the top two to gain one of the promotion spots, and may have to settle for third spot.
