Match Report (courtesy of Martin Johnson)
Woburn Sands Mosquitoes hosted Mursley Hawks, and were potentially looking at going top, or joint top with MK Sharks. if they could record a win.
This looked likely, as they opened up a 3-1 lead, with Rob McPheat and Andy Jenkins comfortably beating Ian Spanswick and David Bartlett, respectively,
and although Martin Johnson dispatched Glenn Barcham in straight games, Rob/Andy combined to beat Ian/Martin in the doubles in four games.
Glenn lost out narrowly to a battling Ian, but Rob put Mosquitoes two ahead again, as despite David edging ahead at 2-1, finished strongly to win in five,
featuring a succession of fine, whipped backhand topspin winners in particular.
However, it was soon 4-4, as Martin beat Andy, then David beat Glenn, both in straight games. The closest two sets were saved until the end, though.
Ian initially struggled against Andy, going 2-0 down, but retrieved well and battled all the way, to eke out a narrow five game win, to put Hawks ahead for the first time.
Rob looked in control for a 2-0 lead against Martin, only to see a repeat of set 9, as Martin battled back to level it, and then edge ahead in game 5, right to the brink of
victory at 10-7, but the fat lady had not yet sung, with Rob valiantly pulling it back to deuce - finally making the match a draw with a last ditch 13-11 win in game 5, to
end a well fought match that leaves Mosquitoes two points behind division leaders, MK Sharks, and Hawks settled in mid table.
