Chackmore Hasbeens vs Mursley Hawks (Div 2)
Chackmore Hasbeens and Mursley Hawks stood in 3rd and 4th positions, after the first two thirds of the season, just three and five points behind the two leaders. In the first two encounters between these two teams, Hasbeens had the upper hand, winning 6-4 at home and 7-3 away; the only two defeats of the season, so far, for Hawks.
With Hasbeen's Sam Willet needing to leave early, he played his three sets straight off, leaving his team 2-1 up, after losing a close one against Martin Johnson, but easing past Ian Spanswick and David Bartlett in straight games. The doubles then saw the regular Hasbeens pairing of Bub Burman and Andy Whitehead taking on Martin and David. Hawks got off to a quick start to take leg one, but Hasbeens appeared to have restored the advantage as they went 2-1 up, however the Hawks pair battled to the end, and sneaked the deciding game 12-10, to inflict just the second doubles defeat of the season on Bub and Andy.
Bub then beat Ian in straight games, to put Hasbeens back ahead, but it was level once again at 3-3 as Martin took a see-saw set against Andy over five games, never looking back after a good start to the final leg. Back came Hasbeens again, as Bub overcame narrowly losing the opening leg to beat David in four games, then Andy overpowered Ian three straight, to put Hasbeens 5-3 up, to set up a potential treble over their rivals.
Set nine saw the two unbeaten players face each other, as Bub played Martin. The opening two legs were neck and neck, with some good hits taking each player to one game, however, in game three Martin got off to a flyer and never looked back, as everything seemed to go in. Game four was closer, but again, Martin's hitting went in when he needed it, to inflict a rare defeat on Bub, ending a run of twelve consecutive singles wins by Bub, whilst Martin has now extended his own run of singles wins to seven. The final set saw Andy play David, and when Andy went 2-0 up, it looked like a third straight defeat on the cards for Hawks against Hasbeens, but the fightback started, as David clawed his way through the next three games 11-8, 12-10, 12-10, to snatch a 5-5 draw by the narrowest of margins, and end a fine match.
With the result being a draw, Hasbeens / Hawks stay in 3rd / 4th, respectively, but both lost ground to the two leading teams, who each won 10-0 this week!
